What Is the GED?

The GED exam is designed for adults who do not have a high school diploma and wish to demonstrate knowledge of a high school curriculum. The exam is divided into five sub-tests, including reading, writing, science, social studies and mathematics.

Most questions are in a multiple-choice format. However, one portion of the math section requires calculations to be inserted into a grid. There is also an essay on the writing section.

After passing all the tests, the examinee is awarded a State of Florida High School diploma. Most employers and colleges recognize this diploma earned by passing the GED exam as equivalent to a traditional high school diploma.

What Are the Age Requirements?

Florida requires you to be 18 years old to take the test. In some cases, those who are 16 and 17 are allowed to take the exam if they obtain an age waiver from their county superintendent of schools. Since qualifications vary between school districts, contact the GED chief examiner in your county to find out specific information about taking the test at 16 or 17.

Where Can I Take the Test?

You must take the GED at an official test center. The Florida Department of Education has a directory of all state testing centers and contact information on its website. Contact your local test center to find out when the test is scheduled. Most centers offer the exam at various times of the week and on Saturdays. Other information is available at the test center, such as fees, where to find official practice tests and how to order transcripts.

What Are Passing Scores?

You must obtain a total score of 2,250 to qualify for a diploma. In addition, no single test can have a score lower than 410. Any test may be taken a total of three times a year. Testing centers may require a wait period or additional instruction before the test can be retaken.

How Can I Prepare?

You can prepare for the GED by contacting your local adult education center. The Florida Department of Education website lists the names and contact information of the directors of the adult education centers in the state. At the adult education centers you can obtain a practice test or assessment to determine what you need to study. Adult education centers in Florida offer preparation classes for each subject on the exam.

In addition, you can prepare on your own through self-study manuals and materials available at bookstores and libraries. The staff at these facilities may be able to recommend online courses and distance learning instruction.
