Where to Find Reading Comprehension Worksheets for Fourth Graders

As a fourth grader, your child has likely completed reading comprehension activities in the classroom. However, additional practice can be beneficial for him or her when preparing for standardized reading tests. At-home practice can also help your son or daughter improve on speed. Because of the wide variety of free reading comprehension passages available online, you can choose topics that fit your child's specific interests. Try these examples or select some of your own.

Narrative

Fictional narratives may be more interesting for your son or daughter to read, and you can find stories relevant to your child's interests online. For example, there are passages about dancing, fishing, baking and sports available from a variety of websites. The website Super Teacher Worksheets offers several types of reading comprehension texts for all grade levels, including fiction, nonfiction, poems, biographies and articles (www.superteacherworksheets.com).

A narrative example that may be most suitable for children with siblings focuses on a young boy who thinks he'd rather have his best friend as his brother and wants to get rid of his sister. In the end, he realizes his sister isn't so bad after all. Not only does the worksheet provide variety with matching, fill-in-the-blank, multiple-choice and short-answer questions, but it also teaches kids a valuable lesson about appreciating family. The text is two pages long with two pages of questions and an answer key.

Expository

Reading comprehension texts may be expository or informative in nature. These are great tools for helping your child improve his or her reading comprehension while also teaching about the subject at hand. An example of this is a how-to list. The website Have Fun Teaching has a fourth grade reading passage with comprehension questions that educates students on how to stay healthy (www.havefunteaching.com).

The text is approximately one page long with ten tips for staying germ-free. One example states, 'Don't share water bottles or drinks. Your friend might not know he or she is sick and spread germs to you.' Upon completion of the text, your son or daughter will answer five multiple-choice questions.

Persuasive

Persuasive writing may be difficult for some students to grasp, so reading examples will give your child a better idea of how it should sound. An example of a persuasive reading comprehension passage is also available from Super Teacher Worksheets (www.superteacherworksheets.com).

For example, there's a 1-page story that focuses on the benefits of running for fun and fitness. There's also two pages of questions that give your child practice with fact versus opinion and relevant vocabulary words. One example states, 'Tell whether each sentence is a fact or opinion: Running is not an easy sport.' An answer key is available for this example as well.
