Fourth Grade TAKS Practice Tests and Questions
The fourth grade Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) is administered to most Texas students in the spring. Texas schools, both public and private, often spend a lot of class time preparing students for this assessment exam. Read on to find out where you can find extra TAKS practice for your child at home.
Fourth graders can expect to be tested on reading, writing and math. All three are made up primarily of multiple-choice questions based on the state's core learning standards, referred to as the TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills).
The reading section contains various fiction and nonfiction passages your child must fluently read and analyze. The writing section requires your child to answer questions addressing spelling, sentence structure, paragraph structure, punctuation and grammar. The math portion will likely cover multiplication, division, word problems, fractions, decimals, measurements, graphs and charts.
Practice Resources from the Texas Education Agency
For detailed TAKS information, you and your child can go to the Texas Education Agency's website. One of the most useful resources available here are free, downloadable, newly revised TAKS practice books. These books are available both in English and in Spanish. They cover the fourth grade TEKS, test sections, test objectives and ways that these objectives are assessed.
In addition to practice books, the Texas Education Agency also provides released exams and answer keys. These tests are released every three years and are a solid way to help your child get ready. You can print and administer them at home in the weeks and days leading up to the actual TAKS.
More Help from Scott Hochberg
State representative Scott Hochberg has a website offering free TAKS from 2009. Although these are the same downloadable exams available from the Texas Education Agency, they are provided in a different format that you might find preferable. Take a look at both and see which your child prefers. Scott Hochberg's site is also a helpful resource to learn about the objectives of your fourth grader's curriculum.
Internet 4 Classrooms' Online Skill Builders
To practice the reading, writing and math skills tested on the fourth grade TAKS, your fourth grader can complete the educational activities and games available from Internet4Classrooms.com. These are all based on fourth grade learning standards and will not only help your child prepare for the TAKS, but also stay ahead of the curve throughout the school year.
