Free Algebra Tutorials and Study Guides
Several websites have free algebra tutorials that can explain concepts that your child may have missed in class. The following sites offer free lessons, demonstrations or activities to help your child succeed in math class.
Free Math Help from LessonTutor.com
Here, there are free algebra tutorials that cover everything learned in beginning algebra. This site is geared toward ninth graders, and includes 12 written lessons. The lessons are easy to read because there is a lot of white space on each page. Also, there are plenty of examples to help the concepts sink in. This site could serve as a supplement to your child's textbook if a certain part of algebra is unclear.
Each lesson comes with several practice problems. Unlike many other sites, the answers are explained in paragraph form. One drawback is that the answers are listed just below the questions, so you may need to cut off the bottom of the paper before handing the top section to your son or daughter to complete.
Math TV's Algebra Videos
Your child can watch a variety of teachers explain algebra concepts in these free math videos. You can browse the algebra section of the site (geometry, trigonometry, calculus and basic math are also listed) to find suitable video lessons. Each video is only a couple of minutes long and features a math teacher standing in a well-lit room, cheerfully speaking into the camera and explaining an algebra unit. Many subtopics of algebra are discussed in more than one video. No special software is required to view the videos, and all are free of charge.
Free Tutorials from PurpleMath.com
PurpleMath.com has dozens of lessons in pre-algebra as well as beginning and intermediate algebra. Your child can locate the tutorial that explains his or her homework and read it before beginning the problems. The lessons are broken into narrowly focused subsections for easy searching. While most of the test is written in black font, colors like green and purple are used to visually differentiate certain key phrases and numbers, which makes is easier to scan your eyes down a page and find what you are looking for.
