Games and Activities from PBS Kids

PBS Kids offers dozens of free reading games for students designed to practice many different reading skills. Many of the reading games made available by PBS Kids are based on popular educational shows that your child may already like, such as Sesame Street, Martha Speaks, The Electric Company, Between the Lions, The Berenstain Bears and Arthur.

In addition to games, there are activities such as the 'Sesame Street E-Card Maker'. First, your child will need to choose from a selection of occasions. These occasions vary from 'Earth Day' to 'Get Well Soon' cards. Your child will then select and create the art, the greeting message and the background image. When the card is complete, your child can e-mail it to whomever he or she wants to.

Reading Practice from FunBrain.com

At FunBrain.com, kids in reading levels up to the eighth grade can play reading games, read e-books, complete Mad Libs and enjoy comics, some of which are interactive. All of this and more is available in the reading section of the website. There are five different reading games that are designed to be relevant to kids who read at a variety of different levels.

A typical game that you and your child will find from FunBrain.com is 'The Grammar Gorillas'. The beginner mode of this game focuses on nouns and verbs only, while the advanced mode includes all of the parts of speech. The object of the game is for your child to find the correct grammatical word in a sentence. When he or she clicks the correct answer, the Grammar Gorilla is fed bananas.
