Free Online Reading Tests to Help Kids Practice Reading

Most states administer standardized reading tests every year to check students' proficiency in core standards. If your child is preparing for an upcoming reading test or simply needs extra reading practice at home, use the following websites for reading resources.

My Schoolhouse's Reading Comprehension Worksheets

Your child can practice comprehension skills with reading lessons from My Schoolhouse. Lessons are available for grades 1-6 and cover a wide array of both fiction and non-fiction subjects. The selections include martial arts, inventors, biographies and the planets. After reading a short passage, your child can answer comprehension questions.

Quizzes are also available for some published books, such as Maurice Sendak's Where the Wild Things Are and Superfudge by Judy Blume. All quizzes are scored online.

Book Adventure's Online Quizzes

Book Adventure motivates kids to read by allowing them to select a book from over 8,000 titles, take quizzes on the book and win points for prizes. Although registration is required, it is completely free.

First, you and your child select a book by searching a database by subject, grade and difficulty level. After reading the book, your child takes a quiz that is graded online. The Parent's Place allows you to track your child's quiz results or help select the next title. The Kid Zone has links to games and other activities as well as a prize library so children can see what they can win.

Free Practice Reading Tests from Pearson Longman

Pearson Longman has free practice reading tests available for grades 1-8. Originally designed to assist limited English proficiency (LEP) students, the tests are also a good resource for any child who might be struggling with reading.

The reading tests have multiple-choice questions as well as a writing portion that includes short answer and essay questions. The multiple formats allow children to first process the information, and then organize it and analyze it in their written responses. The entire test can be printed for grading. Instructions for scoring are provided in the introduction.
