Free Tests for Kids: Top Sites to Take Practice Tests

Practice tests are helpful because they allow you to identify your child's strengths and weaknesses before taking the actual test. They're also beneficial if your child's not used to the test-taking process. The websites below offer free practice tests for a variety of subjects and types of exams.

Standardized Tests from Edinformatics

You can find practice standardized tests at Edinformatics from such states as New York, Massachusetts, Texas, Virginia, Florida, Missouri, South Carolina, Illinois and New Jersey, among others. Depending on the state, full or partial samples from previous years are available in language arts, science and math. Some of the tests also contain answer keys.

Most of the tests open as printable PDF documents. Additionally, Edinformatics includes its own 8th grade science assessment, as well as sample questions from the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) and the Third International Math and Science Survey. If you can't find your state's standardized test at Edinformatics, many states make their standardized tests available on their department of education website.

Math Tests from Education Place

Houghton Mifflin offers free math test practice and preparation at their Education Place website. You can select tests for grades 1-6. Although this site may be especially helpful if your child is using a Houghton Mifflin textbook at school, you can find the appropriate test for your child by searching through the lessons on the Test Prep Practice page. Each set includes eight multiple-choice questions that must be taken online and are instantly graded.

On the Test Quest page, your child can learn test-taking strategies, such as drawing a picture or checking his work. Each strategy is explained in a fun way that may make test taking less intimidating for your child. He can then use the strategy in a sample problem. The site also includes some brain teaser questions for extra math practice.

Online Test Prep from Kids' Zone

The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) offers online tests for 4th, 8th, 9th and 12th grade students at their Kids' Zone. The 'Dare to Compare' page contains over 600 questions in civics, economics, math, science, geography and history. Once a subject is chosen, your child can select the appropriate grade level and up to 20 multiple-choice questions. She can self-check her answers by clicking the 'Show Me The Answers' key at the bottom of the test.
