Free Tutoring Resources and Materials

Sometimes students who are struggling simply need extra review at home. The following free resources can be used as additional review or as resources to answer any questions that your child may have.

Find available tutors

Free Math Help's Message Board

At Free Math Help, your child can post his or her question on the message board and receive free help from a volunteer. Although your child will have to wait for a response, there are plenty of other resources available. For instance, he or she may be able to find the answer by searching through other discussions on the message board. Additionally, there is a variety of written and sample video math lessons, ranging from simplifying fractions to multiplying polynomials.

The videos can be helpful because they feature a visual aid. Your child may also find it helpful to hear a different explanation from someone other than his or her teacher. The videos aren't very long, so your child won't have to concentrate for extended periods of time. The instructor in each video uses math problems to explain a concept.

Free Tutoring Lessons from Learn To Be

Kids in kindergarten through 8th grade are eligible for free tutoring sessions from Learn To Be. The tutoring sessions are completed online and are available from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Pacific Standard Time. No appointment is necessary, and help is available in math, science and language arts. Whatever your child needs, you'll likely be able to find it here. To access the session, your child will have to create a free account and user name.

Because the sessions are virtual, the tutor will communicate with your child through a microphone. On the screen, he or she can follow and participate in solving problems using an online whiteboard. In addition, your child can always review the lesson because each session is recorded and archived on the site.

Video Tutorials at HippoCampus

At HippoCampus, your son or daughter can watch tutorial videos for a variety of subjects, including algebra, American government, psychology and history. This site is best suited for high school students and even has videos for specific classes, like U.S. History for AP (Advanced Placement). Each subject is divided into subcategories, so your teen can easily find what he or she needs.

Some of the videos feature supplemental materials, such as an overview of what you will learn, a text version of the presentation and even practice questions. The website requires the Adobe Flash Player to view the videos.
