How Do I Qualify for the GED Diploma?

To pass each of the five sections of the GED test, you must receive a score of at least 410. However, the total score required is 2,250, which averages to 450 per test. This requirement applies to all language editions, including English, French and Spanish.

In addition to meeting the scoring requirements, you must be at least 18 years old and your former high school class must have graduated. You're also eligible for a GED certificate if you're at least 16 and a graduate of the Michigan Youth Challenge Academy and meet the scoring requirements. (Although the Michigan National Guard administers the MYC Academy, participants aren't obligated to military service.) Contact the Michigan Department of Education for specific details about GED eligibility.

Alternatively, high schools are authorized to issue high school diplomas to individuals as long as the applicant meets the above requirements and is a resident or a former student of the school district. The local high school may also require candidates to have been enrolled in high school for one or more years.

What's on the GED Test?

The GED test measures knowledge learned in high school subjects including math, social studies, the sciences and also language arts (covering writing and reading skills). The GED credential is regarded as a level of accomplishment that's equal to a high school diploma. The GED test is seven and a half hours long and features multiple-choice questions as well as one written essay. One part of the math test requires a calculator, which is provided at the testing center.

Can I Take the Test Again?

Applicants who don't pass the test may retake all or parts of it. However, they're encouraged to enroll in classes or other preparation programs. It's also recommended to wait six months before re-testing. Other restrictions may apply as determined by the chief examiner at the testing center.

Adult education centers offer classes to prepare you for the GED test. To find your local adult education center contact the Michigan Department of Education or check the department's website. The GED Testing Service also lists preparation classes available for each state. Search for one near you by entering a ZIP code on their website.
