Who Can Take the GED Test?

In the state of Texas, anyone can take the GED who is at least 18, doesn't already have a high school diploma or GED and is a resident of the state with proper ID. If you're 17 years old, you may take the test by meeting the general requirements and with permission of your parent or guardian. If you're 16, you won't be eligible to take the GED unless you meet the general requirements and are in the care of a state agency or under a court order. When Is the Test?

There are a variety of test dates throughout the year in the city of Austin and surrounding areas. The TEA website lists all of the testing centers in Texas. If the testing dates in Austin don't work with your schedule, you can take the test in another city or county. Some test centers require advance registration, while others take walk-ins. Tests are available in English, Spanish and braille.

How Can I Prepare?

If you left school early, or didn't attend high school beyond the 10th grade, you may need to prepare for the GED. A good way to discover your strengths and weaknesses is to take a practice test. You can find GED practice tests at bookstores, libraries, online and through adult education centers.

What's on the Test?

The GED test is divided into five sections, including math, language arts (reading and writing), social studies and science. The questions are multiple-choice and there is one full-length essay to write. You must earn a total score of 2250, which requires a minimum score of 410 on each section and an average score of 450 to pass.

Can I Retake It?

If you don't pass the GED on your first attempt, you may take the test again at any time if you scored at least 410 on each test. If you scored below 410 on any single test, you must wait six months to retest. An exception is made by showing a request letter signed by a tutor or teacher from a state-approved GED preparation program.
