Who Can Take the GED Test?

In the state of Illinois, you're eligible to take the GED if you:

  • Are 17 years old or older
  • Are not a high school graduate or GED graduate
  • Have maintained residence in the state of Illinois for at least 30 days

In addition, if you're school age and have been enrolled in a public, private or home school in the past 12 months, you must get an official letter of withdrawal from the last school attended. Some provisions are made for students who are 16 or who have court orders. You can contact the ICCB or the Cook County Regional Office of Education for more information.

Where and When I Can Take the Test?

Residents of Illinois must register for the GED test at the Regional Office of Education where they live. If you live in Chicago, you would register with the Cook County GED Testing Program. The Cook County website lists 15 different locations for taking the test. Depending on the location, the GED test is given between 1-6 times per month, on weekdays and Saturdays. At some sites, you can take the test in Spanish.

How Can I Prepare for the GED Test?

Depending on how far you went in school and how long it has been since you attended, you may have to do some preparation. The GED tests measure knowledge in five areas:

  • Language arts, writing (including writing an essay)
  • Language arts, reading
  • Science
  • Social studies
  • Mathematics

A score of 2250 is required to pass the GED test. In addition, you must get a score of at least 410 on each of the five sections. The state of Illinois requires GED test takers to pass the Illinois State Constitution Exam, has a pass/fail score.

Free preparation classes are offered to Illinois residents through the ICCB. You can also study on your own by using study guides and online resources. The ICCB or the Cook County GED Testing Program office might provide other recommendations.

Can I Retake the GED test?

Depending on your scores, you may need to retake all parts of the GED exam. You may consider studying for the parts you didn't pass before taking the test again. Contact the Cook County GED Testing office for more questions about retaking the GED test.
