What Are the GED Tests?

The GED tests measure the skills and knowledge attained during a 4-year high school curriculum. The exam is divided into five sub-tests covering reading, writing, science, social studies and mathematics. By passing all the tests, the examinee demonstrates mastery of the high school curriculum and is awarded a certificate.

Most questions are multiple-choice and there is one essay to write. The test takes approximately 7.5 hours to complete. In addition to English, it is offered in Spanish and French.

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?

You can take the test at age 18 if:

• You're a Nebraska resident
• You don't have a high school diploma
• It's been one year since your high school class has graduated

You're also eligible to take the test at ages 16-17 by meeting additional requirements established by the Nebraska Department of Education (NDE). Contact your local testing center to find out if you qualify.

How Can I Find Testing Centers?

The GED can't be taken online; it must be taken at an official testing center. Schedules vary by center, but most offer the exam at various times during the week and on Saturdays. What Are Passing Scores?

You must attain a total score of 2,250, which averages to 450 per test. In addition, no score may be lower than 410. You are allowed to retest after a 60-day waiting period. You're exempt from the waiting period if you show evidence of study through an NDE-approved learning center or tutor.

How Can I Prepare?

GED testing centers can usually direct you to the closest site for instruction and preparation. In addition, self-study options are available through manuals, which you can obtain at bookstores or libraries. You can also find practice tests, sample questions and coursework online.
