How to Earn a GED Credential

Am I Eligible for a GED Diploma?

In Georgia, the GED diploma is a suitable option if you're between the ages of 16 and 19, aren't currently in high school and have approval from the Technical College System of Georgia's (TCSG) Office of Adult Education, which administrates GED tests (www.tcsg.edu). If you don't have a high school diploma or equivalency and are older than 19, you also can consider earning the GED in preparation for college or to potentially increase your wages.

You don't have to be a resident of Georgia. You can take the test as long as you can provide proof of age with a valid form of identification, such as a passport or driver's license.

Where Can I Take the GED Test?

As of 2011, there were eight testing centers in the greater Atlanta area, including libraries, college campuses and adult education centers from Marietta to Clarkston. You must sit for the 7-hour test in a single day. Some test locations, like the TCSG, offer walk-in testing and may be open in the evenings on certain days.

What Subjects Will I Be Tested On?

You'll be tested on the subjects determined by the American Council on Education for the standard national GED exam, which include language arts (reading and writing), math, science and social studies. All five components include multiple choice questions. Additionally, you'll be required to write an essay to pass the 2-hour language arts writing test. A calculator will be provided for the first part of the 90-minute math test.

Can I Retake All or Part of the Test?

Depending on your overall score, you may be able to retest in a subject right away or after a period of 3-6 months. You'll only need to pay for each individual subject test that you retake. In other words, you won't have to pay the full fees for the second time.

If your average score is below a certain number, you may be required to complete an educational program approved by the state before you can retake the GED test. You can find free GED preparation classes offered through the Atlanta Public Schools, Dalton State College and local technical colleges.
