Getting a GED Certificate in Virigina

GED Test

The GED tests measure skills and knowledge obtained through a regular high school program of study. Rather than asking specific facts, the tests require you to apply critical-thinking and analysis skills. A GED certificate is recognized as equivalent to a high school diploma by many employers and colleges. The test battery is divided into five content areas, including language arts (reading and writing), math, science and social studies. You will also be required to write an essay.

Regulations and Requirements

If you're at least 18, don't have a high school diploma and are not enrolled in high school, you're eligible to take the GED. In addition, students as young as 16 are eligible if they meet certain requirements such as being home schooled, enrolled in an alternative education program or incarcerated in an adult correctional facility. If you're under 18, contact the VDOE for more information about specific age regulations.

You register for the test by applying at the local school division where you live and by paying the appropriate fees. Tests are offered Monday-Friday, during the day and in the evening. You qualify for a Virginia GED certificate by receiving a 2250 total score (averaging 450 per test). Additionally, you cannot have a score lower than 410 on each test. You can pre-register on the VDOE website, where you can locate testing centers and schedules, access your scores and order transcripts.

How to Prepare

Individuals who are at least 18 and not enrolled in public or private school are eligible to enroll in GED classes after taking a placement examination at an adult basic education center. Depending on the results of the exam, you will be guided to a preparation program best suited to your needs. The classes are offered in various locations throughout Virginia Beach. Opportunities are also available for one-on-one tutoring or remedial study. Additionally, practice manuals and other materials are available for purchase.
