What Is the GED?

The GED tests measure the skills and knowledge acquired in a high school education. The certificate obtained by passing the exam is equivalent to a high school diploma. The five sub-tests include the following subjects: reading, writing, science, social studies and mathematics.

Who Is Eligible to Take the Test?

If you're 19 years old and not enrolled in school, you can take the test with no other requirements. Students who are 17-18 must be enrolled in adult education classes until they are ready to take the Official Practice Test (OPT). Additionally, these students must take and pass the OPT with a score of at least 2,250.

It is possible to take the test at age 16 if you can meet additional qualifications and obtain an age waiver. Further questions about eligibility should be directed to the Louisiana Department of Education.

Where Can I Find Preparation Programs?

GED preparation programs are offered through adult education services provided at all community colleges within the Louisiana Community & Technical College System (LCTCS). Contact your local adult education office to find out about completing prerequisite instruction and assessments for the GED. If you prefer to study on your own, you will likely be able to find GED study guides at your local bookstore or library.

Where Can I Take the GED?

The exam can only be given at an official testing center. Testing centers are operated by the LCTCS. These centers offer the test at various times and days of the week, so you will have to contact your local center to find out the schedule. A list of test centers is available on the LCTCS website.

In addition to English, the tests are available in Spanish and French. Accommodations for people who have documented disabilities are also available. Everyone must show a valid photo ID to be admitted to the test.

Can I Retake the Test?

You must score a total of 2,250 to pass, which averages to 450 per test. In addition, no single test score can be lower than 410. All or part of the exam can be retaken after a 30-day wait period. You can take any individual test up to three times per calendar year.
