Where Can I Take the GED Test?

You can only take the GED at an official test center approved by the Florida Department of Education. Miami-Dade County currently has three public school sites where the test can be taken. By contacting the test centers, you can find out about testing schedules and where you can find adult education programs to help you prepare for the exam.

What's the Age Requirement?

Miami-Dade County requires you to be at least 18 years old to take the GED unless you obtain a waiver from your local school board. You are allowed to enroll in the Miami-Dade College GED preparation program at 16 or 17 if you have parental approval and a signed withdrawal form from your high school principal.

What Is the GED Test?

The GED test is divided into five sub-tests covering the core subject areas of the high school curriculum, including science, social studies, mathematics, reading and writing. Most of the test is in multiple-choice format, but there is an essay to write. When you pass the test, you are given a high school diploma from the state of Florida and are considered a high school graduate.

What's a Passing Score?

You must earn a score of at least 410 on each content area test and a total score of at least 2,250 to earn a diploma. You can retake all or parts of the test, but you can only take the same test three times a year. Additionally, some testing centers might require you to enroll in preparation courses or wait a period of time before re-testing.

How Can I Prepare?

If you haven't attended school for a while, it might be a good idea to enroll in a preparation class. GED education programs offered through Miami-Dade College (MDC) charge very low tuition and are approved by the Florida Department of Education. Teachers and staff can give you practice tests and subject area assessments to help you identify what you need to study. Depending on the results, you can enroll in GED classes for additional instruction. Online classes are also available through MDC.
