What Is the GED?

The GED exam is a series of five tests covering the subjects typically taught in a 4-year high school curriculum. After passing all five tests, you will receive a certificate verifying that you have attained academic proficiency equal to a high school education.

Most employers and colleges accept the GED certificate as equivalent to a high school diploma. The American Council of Education (ACE) states on its GED Testing Service website that to pass the test a candidate must show a level of academic knowledge that is equal to or greater than the knowledge shown by about 60% of those who graduate from high school (www.acenet.edu).

What's on the Test?

The test is divided into sections measuring knowledge and concepts in reading, writing, social studies, science and mathematics. An essay is required to demonstrate writing and communication skills. Each test is timed, and the entire battery of tests takes about 7.5 hours.

In addition to English, the test is available in Spanish and French. Be aware that some foreign-language versions of the GED must be requested in advance. If an examinee takes the test in another language, he or she must also take and pass an English language proficiency exam. Accommodations are available for individuals with documented disabilities.

How Can I Find a Test Center?

All of the community colleges in North Carolina are also GED testing centers. The North Carolina Community College GED office has a directory of all the colleges on its website, so you can find the one closest to you.

What Steps Do I Need to Take to Get a GED Credential?

All applicants must pay a testing fee of $25 to take the GED exam. If you would like to earn a GED credential, here are some steps to take:

• Enroll in a GED program at your local community college, attend a new student orientation and take an initial assessment.
• Prepare for the exam by enrolling in a GED course, where you will study sample test questions and complete a post-test.
• Take and pass an Official GED Practice Test (OPT) and receive an official GED referral form.
• Register for the GED by attending a required registration information session.
• Take the test. Remember to bring all required forms and a valid picture ID to the test center.
• After successfully taking the test and earning your GED credential, you may request a GED transcript by fax or by e-mail from the North Carolina GED Records Office.
