How Can I Study for the GED Online?

Online Resource Materials

The GED is divided into five content areas covering mathematics, language arts (reading and writing), social studies and science. It measures the knowledge and skills acquired through a regular 4-year high school curriculum.

GED Testing Service, the official provider of the GED, offers sample questions and answers on its website for each of the content areas covered on the test. Additional resources for the mathematics portion of the test include a formulas page, calculator instructions and examples of alternate format questions.

There are many other online companies that offer help preparing for the test. Some are free and others charge various amounts for their programs. It's a good idea to check for recommendations before you pay a fee. Also, review what services the program provides, such as personalized feedback and tutorial assistance.

Official GED Practice Test

Taking a practice test will allow you to become familiar with the types of questions you will encounter on the exam. Steck-Vaughn offers a GED practice test for free in English and Spanish. The exam is taken entirely online and you can see a detailed explanation for each answer using the 'feedback' button.

GED Connection Practice Activities

GED Connection, produced by LiteracyLink, offers a free online practice test in each subject area to help you decide what areas you need to study. You can then use the learning modules to review. The online lessons provide interactive lessons and activities to provide subject area practice and development of GED test-taking skills.

The activities do not require a set amount of time to complete and can be accessed wherever there is an Internet connection available. GED Connection is free, but requires you to register on the website before you have access to the program. Additionally, some of the review materials require a fee. There is also a companion television series available in connection with Public Broadcasting Services (PBS). More information about this program is available on the LiteracyLink website.
