How Can I Locate a GED Testing Center?

The GED can't be taken online, so you'll have to find an official GED test center near you. Your state or county board of education can help you locate test centers. In addition, the GED Testing Service, a program of the American Council on Education (ACE), lists contact agencies for every state on its website.

Most states allow you to take the GED at any center, but some states require you to test in the county where you live. Many centers operate additional sites that are not necessarily listed on the testing service website. Once you get the contact information based on your ZIP code, call to see if there's an alternate site for you.

The GED test is also offered to United States citizens living abroad via computer and a program called Prometric. You must be at least 17 years old to take the GED outside the United States and Canada. More information can be found on the GED Testing Service website.

Schedules and Hours of Operation

Be aware that while some test centers may keep standard daytime business hours Monday through Friday, others may operate on nights and weekends, too. It's a good idea to call your local center to check when it's open. The test can be taken in English, Spanish, French or braille, but not every center offers all of these options. Call to confirm the test schedule, what languages are available and any accommodations you are eligible to receive.

Preparing for the GED

The GED tests your knowledge of a 4-year high school curriculum. It's divided into five content areas: writing, reading, mathematics, science and social studies. A total score of 2,250 is required to pass, with a score of at least 410 on each subject.

Many test centers offer practice tests, which can help you identify what subjects will be covered and how the questions are arranged. You can also review your answers to discover what areas you need to study. If you need additional help, the staff at the center can help you locate classes and also recommend print and online instructional resources.
