Supplemental Educational Services Tutoring

When looking into tutoring options, the first place you'll want to check is with your children's school becuase supplemental educational services (SES) may be offered. The SES program is a tutoring-based service that gives extra help to students in science, math and language arts, and provides the service for free. To qualify, students must attend a Title 1 school that has not achieved academic success over several years. A majority of the time, the tutoring sessions take place on campus. However, you may be able to select an SES-approved tutoring program to receive private one-on-one help for your child at home.

Good Friends Tutoring Program

The Good Friends tutoring program is a community outreach initiative sponsored by Indiana University. Founded in 1992, the program pairs volunteers with students of all ages to serve as mentors and tutors. The volunteers commit to meeting with the child they're assigned to for at least one hour every week. The students in the program receive homework help as well as tutoring in core subjects, like math and reading.

Brightwood Community Center

For a free after-school option, the Brightwood Community Center offers a kid's club on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. From 4:00pm to 7:00pm, students receive homework and tutoring help. In addition, students also get dinner and participate in recreational activities.

M.G. Dad's Club Youth Football League

More than just an athletic football league, the M.G Dad's Club also offers tutoring at Butler University's Irwin Library. The program is also sponsored by Martin University. The tutoring sessions are held on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:00pm to 7:30pm.

OASIS Intergenerational Tutoring

OASIS Intergenerational Tutoring is a tutoring service that focuses on reading and improving students' test scores. Primarily working with students in grades K-4, older volunteers work with individual students on a weekly basis at no charge to the students or school districts. Each volunteer in the program receives specialized training and works with students using a curriculum specifically designed to help struggling elementary-aged readers.
