What Is on the GED?

The GED is composed of five separate tests covering the knowledge and skills attained in a high school curriculum. The subject areas you'll be tested on include language arts (reading and writing), science, social studies and mathematics. Most of the questions are multiple-choice, with some calculations required for part of the math test. You'll also have to write an essay to show you can write and communicate effectively.

Where Can I Take the Test?

The GED can't be taken online; you must take it an official testing center. You can find all of the centers in Maryland by entering your ZIP code on the American Council of Education (ACE) website. Tests are offered at schools, colleges and other locations on weekdays and on Saturdays throughout the year. Testing times are scheduled in the morning and evening.

How Can I Prepare for the GED?

It's beneficial to prepare for the test, especially if you have been out of school for a while or are younger than 18. Adult education centers offering GED preparation services are located throughout Maryland and can be found by contacting the state department of education. The staff at the centers can help you get started by giving you the official practice test (OPT) and suggesting appropriate classes.

Online preparation is also an option if you're at least 16, a Maryland resident, officially out of school and can demonstrate a 9th grade skill level in reading and math. The Maryland GED-i is a free, teacher supported, Internet program offering 15 sessions of study. After a pre-test, the program assigns you to lessons you haven't mastered and offers feedback and individualized guidance. You must also commit to studying 5-6 hours a week and submitting six weekly assignments to be eligible for this program.

How Can I Get an Application?

The GED application packet can be downloaded on the Maryland Department of Literacy Services website. All information including eligibility forms and regulations are included in the file.
