Checking Math Homework Online

Time spent on homework can be more productive if children have the option of checking their answers and understanding why they got certain problems wrong. This gives them an additional opportunity to learn from the assignment and strengthen their skills.

How to Use Math Homework Checkers

If you introduce your child to an online math homework checker, be sure she understands that it should only be used to check homework, not to do homework. Ask your child to complete her homework to the best of her ability, and be sure she shows her work. If there are problems she's stuck on, make sure she spends sufficient time trying to figure them out.

Then, let your child enter her problems and answers into an online homework checker and mark them right or wrong. Ideally, she will record the correct answer to each problem on a separate sheet of paper. For the problems she got wrong, ask her to go back and try to fix them without looking at the answer sheet.

When she's attempted each one again, ask her to show you what she's done differently and how she's arrived at her new answer. Then, let her compare her new answers to the ones produced by the homework checker. If she still has any wrong answers, ask her to repeat this process until she gets the correct answer.

Where to Find Online Homework Checkers

You can find online homework checkers that cover basic math skills, as well as high school algebra, geometry, trigonometry and calculus, at Brightstorm (www.brightstorm.com ) and WebMath (www.webmath.com). These websites will prompt your child to enter information about the math problem he's solving, and they will calculate the correct answer based on the information he puts in.

For example, if he wants to know the area of a rectangle, he simply provides that information on the website, and then he'll be prompted to enter the shape's length and width. After he submits this information, he'll get an instant answer.

At WebMath, your child will also get a free answer explanation with each problem. Brightstorm offers free answers, but the answer explanations are only available to paid subscribers. However, if you're following the procedure outlined above, you probably won't need answer explanations because you're encouraging your child to figure them out the solutions on his own.
