Learn about the Grade 4 Science Test in New York State

The 4th grade science test is typically administered to students at the end of the school year. It's comprised of multiple-choice and open-ended questions. The exam is timed and presented in several sections. After the written test, a hands-on test is administered. The material covered in the test is based on the New York State Learning Standards.

How Can I Help My Child Prepare?

To get your 4th grader ready for the test, stay in touch with her teacher and school counselor. Provide your child with a positive, nurturing learning environment at home and review new science lessons with her on a regular basis. If she's still struggling, consider hiring a science tutor.

You can also familiarize yourself with the New York State Learning Standards, which are available at the New York State Education Department's website (www.nysed.gov). You can check her understanding of the concepts and skills outlined in the learning standards. Make sure she pays special attention to bar graphs, Venn diagrams and charts because they appear on the science test.

What Will the Test Cover?

In order to pass the exam, your child will need to make hypotheses and predictions, understand scientific theories and use basic scientific methods. He should also be familiar with science laboratory equipment for the hands-on component of the exam.

A number of scientific fields are covered, such as biology and astronomy. For example, there may be questions about the phases of the moon, the food chain or photosynthesis. The test also covers measurements, weather, temperature, pollution and the life cycle.

Where Can I Find Preparation Materials for the Test?

Previous versions of New York State's 4th grade science test are available from the New York State Education Department or other websites. You can also check with your child's school.

When your child takes the practice test, set her up in a quiet, distraction-free room, and time how long it takes her to complete the test. When you go over a practice test with her, you can gain a clear picture of what subjects she needs help with, if any. Help her strengthen these areas, and then administer another practice exam or review that particular section.
