What's the New York State 8th Grade Test?

The 8th grade tests in New York State include mathematics, English, language arts and science and social studies sections. All 8th grade students in public schools and some private schools are required to take the exam in the state of New York. The exams are used to determine your child's learning level and how he or she ranks in the state and nation. Your child can expect to take the test either in late May or early June.

What's on the Test?

The New York State 8th grade test is presented primarily in a multiple-choice format with a few open-ended questions as well. The math section typically includes charts and grids, while you may have to answer a few questions in essay form in the English/language arts section. The following is a brief summary of what you can expect from each section:

Math

The math portion of the New York State 8th grade test mostly covers algebra and basic geometry.

English/language arts

In this section, your child will need to read a number of passages and answer questions that cover everything from comprehension to grammar and sentence structure. He or she may also deconstruct a narrative, address grammatical issues, plan short essays and then write them.

Science

While the science portion of the test is primarily based on biology, there are also questions about astronomy and nutrition. Knowledge of the laboratory and tools such as the periodic table are also mandatory.

Social studies

For the social studies section of the exam, you can expect to answer questions about American history, government, economics and geography. You'll also need to be able to analyze and interpret maps and documents.

How Can I Get Ready for Test Day?

First of all, it's integral that your child completes all of his or her assignments and studies for tests and quizzes throughout the entire school year. If your child does this, when it comes time to study for the New York State 8th grade test, he or she will be ready. You can get practice tests from your school, from the New York Department of Education or from a number of other online resources. Use the practice exams to determine what your child's strengths and weaknesses are. You can then focus on the subjects that your 8th grader most needs to brush up on.

What Resources Are There to Help Me?

There are a plethora of websites and other resources that can help your 8th grader with test preparation. Check with the school and your child's teachers to find out what resources can be made available. Many sites make lessons and activities available based on 8th grade standards. You may also download practice exams from the New York Office of Assessment Policy, Development and Administration as well as find information from the New York Department of Education.

If your son or daughter is struggling in any subject, consider hiring with a tutor. There are a number of different ways to go about this. Your child's school may provide before or after-school assistance. You can also hire a private tutor or someone from a tutoring company.
