New Jersey (NJ) GED: What You Need for a GED in New Jersey
If you live in New Jersey, you can take the GED (General Educational Development) test to earn a diploma that is equivalent to a high school diploma. Read on to find out about eligibility requirements, test centers and other information about getting a GED diploma in New Jersey.
What Are the GED Tests?
The GED test measures skills and concepts normally attained by the end of high school. The five sub-tests cover reading, writing, science, social studies and mathematics. Most of the questions are multiple-choice, although there is an essay to write. The test is available in English, Spanish or French.
Who Is Eligible to Take the Test?
Anyone who is at least 16 and not enrolled in an accredited public or private school may take the GED test. However, those under 18 must submit an official permission form signed by a parent or legal guardian. There is no prior residency requirement, but all candidates must show an approved form of identification when they register for the test.
What Are Passing Scores?
You must earn a combined score of 2,250 to pass the exam, averaging 450 per test. The minimum passing score required on each sub-test is 410. If you fall below the minimum on any single test, you will not pass regardless of the other scores you received. Individuals who take the Spanish or French versions are also required to pass an English equivalency exam.
How Do I Prepare for the GED?
New Jersey has options available to prepare for the exam, including free courses at local adult education centers. The staff at the centers can assess your skill levels and help you enroll in prep classes if necessary.
If you can't attend classes, New Jersey Network Public Television and Radio offers televised instruction through a program titled 'GED Connection.' It's aired four days a week, Monday through Thursday at 5 a.m. GED Connection is sponsored by Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) LiteracyLink and Kentucky Educational Television (KET).
Where Can I Take the Test?
The test must be taken at an official New Jersey GED testing center. The New Jersey Department of Education has a website which allows you to search for test centers by county. If you require special testing options, such as a test in Spanish, confirm that the testing center is able to accommodate your needs.
