What Are the Eligibility Requirements?

You can take the test if you're at least 19 years old. If you're 16-18, you can take the test if you qualify for an age waiver. The GED page on the Ohio Department of Education website has downloadable applications as well as age-waiver and parental consent forms.

You do not have to be an Ohio resident to take the exam. Anyone with a valid form of photo ID is eligible, provided they meet the age requirements. Non-residents will not receive a diploma, but they will get a transcript as evidence that they passed the GED. Most employers and colleges accept passing scores as equivalent to a high school diploma.

What's on the Test?

The GED exam is comprised of five sub-tests measuring the skills and knowledge acquired in a high school curriculum. The subject areas are reading, writing, mathematics, science and social studies. The writing section has an essay, which measures communication skills.

Where Can I Take the Test?

The exam must be taken at an official test center. A list of centers and contact information is available on the Ohio Department of Education's GED page. An application must be completed before scheduling an appointment to take the test.

What Are Passing Scores?

You must receive a total score of 2,250 to pass. In addition, no score on a single test can be lower than 410. Any test can be retaken until a passing score is obtained and the score on the full battery is at least 2,250. The full test or any sub-test can be taken up to three times per calendar year.

How Can I Prepare for the GED?

You can prepare for the test by using manuals and textbooks, which you can purchase or check out of the library. There are also resources available online, such as practice tests and sample questions. The official GED Testing Service website has information about preparing online or through self-study.

In addition, Ohio has GED Practice Center sites that offer free preparation classes and practice tests. A list of centers can be found on the GED page website.
