Philadelphia GED: Info About Earning Your GED in Philadelphia
In Pennsylvania you can earn a Commonwealth Secondary School Diploma by passing the GED (General Educational Development) test. Read on to find out about eligibility requirements, testing centers and other information on the GED in Philadelphia.
What Are the GED Tests?
The GED exam assesses the knowledge and skills covered in a high school curriculum. There are five sections on the test, which include reading, writing, science, social studies and mathematics. Most questions are in a multiple-choice format; however, the writing section includes one written essay. The GED certificate is considered equivalent to a high school diploma by most U.S. employers and colleges.
Who Is Eligible to Take the Test?
You're eligible to take the test if you are:
- 18 years old
- A Pennsylvania resident
- Not a high school graduate
- Not enrolled in a secondary school
You can take the test at 16 or 17 by meeting the above requirements and providing a letter from your school superintendent or principal stating that you have withdrawn from school. You must also provide a letter from the appropriate official stating that passing the GED is a requirement for employment, post secondary school enrollment or induction into the armed forces. Contact the Pennsylvania Department of Education to find out more information.
What's a Passing Score?
A total score of 2250 is required, which averages to 450 per test. A score of less than 410 on any single test is considered failing and must be re-taken. Retesting is allowed on any single test up to three times a year.
Where Can I Take the Test?
The GED can't be taken online; it must be taken at an official testing center. You can find locations and contact information in Philadelphia by entering your ZIP code on the official GED Testing Service website sponsored by the American Council of Education.
How Can I Prepare for the GED?
Free preparation classes for the GED are offered through adult basic education (ABE) centers. You can find programs in Philadelphia by using the locator on the Pennsylvania Department of Education website.
Distance learning through the Internet, workbooks and videos is also available for people who can't attend classes or prefer to study on their own. Contact your ABE center for more information on this option.
