Why Take a Practice Test for the GED?

According to the GED Testing Service, about 30% of people who take the GED do not pass (www.ace.net). You'll have a better chance of success by studying thoroughly and taking a practice test, which will show your strengths and weaknesses. Also, if you have been out of school a while or stopped attending regularly, you might not be knowledgeable about current high school subject material. By taking a practice test, you'll get a feel for the kinds of thinking and problem-solving skills you'll need to pass the GED.

Where Can I Get a Practice GED Test?

There are many practice tests available in print or online to suit your learning style and time constraints. You can take some on the Internet or purchase them in bookstores. You might even borrow a practice test from the library, although it's more convenient to have your own copy to mark on.

In some states, practice tests are administered by adult basic education offices and centers. Feedback, tutoring and individualized study plans might also be available to you at adult education centers. An in-person class will likely be beneficial if you need help with the essay part of the language arts test or if you do better with an instructor.

One online source, Steck-Vaughn, offers the official practice test (OPT) for free. Here, you'll find half-length and full-length tests that are comparable in format, difficulty and content to the actual GED. You'll also get feedback on your answers. The Steck-Vaughn practice test is available in English, Spanish and French. The American Educational Development (ACE) GED Testing Services website also has practice questions and answers from each of the subtests.

What's on the GED?

The GED tests your knowledge in five content areas including reading, writing, science, social studies and mathematics. The tests are mostly multiple-choice, and there is one essay to write. You're allowed a specified amount of time for each test, and a total time of seven hours.
