Third Grade Practice Test Suggestions

Reading Skills

One way you can test your third grade children is by having them read stories and answer comprehension questions. Specifically, the tests they'll take in school will ask questions about character descriptions, sequence of events and the contribution illustrations bring to the overall story. Furthermore, third grade students are expected to compare and contrast the elements found in stories and understand point of view. Based on this, you can create your own tests for the books you have them read at home.

Spelling and Vocabulary

As they read, many students naturally learn to decode unfamiliar words using context clues. However, it can help to explicitly teach your children how to break a word down into more manageable parts, including prefixes and suffixes. Then, test their understanding by administering a short quiz in which they must break down words like 'unbreakable' and 'untied'.

Third graders will also work on spelling in school. In addition to the weekly spelling list, your children will likely benefit from practice tests that cover commonly misspelled or irregularly spelled words.

Grammar

For the sake of grammar improvement, you can give your third grade students tests about using regular and irregular nouns and verbs. Tests covering verb tenses and subject-verb agreement will also help them improve their grades in English. Furthermore, you may want to look into online exams that will test students' ability to use correct punctuation and capitalization. When grading these practice tests, look for patterns in the types of mistakes your children make.

Multiplication and Division

In third grade, students learn simple multiplication and division facts. One of the best ways to help your child learn these facts is through repetitive and frequent review sessions. You can use flash cards, which you can create on your own using index cards. Review every night for 5-10 minutes. Then, at the end of the week, give your children a timed test to see what facts they still need to work on.
