How to Earn a GED in San Antonio

Requirements to Take the GED Test

The GED test can be taken in San Antonio by individuals who:

  • Are 18 years old
  • Are a resident of the state
  • Are not enrolled in an accredited high school
  • Are not a high school graduate
  • Have a government-issued photo ID

You can take the test at 17 if you meet the above requirements and have permission from your parent or guardian. You are also eligible at 17 if you are enrolled in an approved in-school GED preparation program. You can test at 16 if you meet the general requirements and are in the care of a state agency, under a court order or in a Job Corps training program. Contact the TEA for more specific information about eligibility requirements for 16 and 17-year-olds.

The GED can't be taken over the Internet. You must take the test at an official testing center, which can be found on the TEA website either by city or ZIP code. There are several centers listed in San Antonio with contact information and current testing schedules.

Score Requirements and Retesting Policy

The GED is divided into five tests that measure academic knowledge in language arts (reading and writing), mathematics, science and social studies. To meet the minimum requirements established by the American Council of Education (ACE), you must attain a total score of 2250 (averaging 450 per test) and no lower than 410 on each test.

If you scored 410 or higher, you may retest at any time. If you scored below 410, you must wait six months to prepare for the exam. An exception is made for individuals who obtain a Retest Letter from a state-certified GED preparation teacher or private tutor.

Preparation

There are opportunities to prepare for the GED by taking classes at adult basic education centers or through independent and online study. The TEA lists literacy centers and other resource materials available to help prepare for the test. For instance, the American Council on Education provides sample test questions. Similarly, Texas Learns has eight adult education centers throughout the state.
