School Words: List of Words Used in Schools
Children can benefit from additional spelling and vocabulary practice at home. You can help your child practice the words he or she learns at school by using flashcards or other skill building exercises. Browse the following resources for spelling and vocabulary lessons and worksheets you can create and download.
HomeSpellingWords.com Online Spelling Program
You can test your child on words at his or her grade level using HomeSpellingWords.com's practice activities and review. You can enter your child's weekly spelling test or use a pre-made spelling list for your child's grade level. Each word is said aloud and your child types in the correct spelling. The program also allows you to use sentences with the word included for extra practice.
This program is especially beneficial for English language learners and kids with learning disabilities because they can hear the word and visualize it. Hearing the word used in a sentence also allows children to understand the word's context.
AAASpell.com Spelling Lessons
AAASpell.com has interactive spelling and vocabulary lessons for grades 1-8. You can either enter your child's word list or use a pre-made list. There are activities to help kids both learn and practice the words.
At first, your child can hear the word spoken and write it down. In follow-up activities, part of the same word will be given and your child will have to supply 1-2 missing letters to spell the word correctly. Other activities include spelling the same word by trading letters, unscrambling letters, removing a letter and putting the word in alphabetical order.
Tools for Educators' Customizable Worksheets
Tools for Educators has various worksheet generators you can use to create customized spelling practice for your child. Word searches and crossword puzzles can be fun ways for your child to practice at home. Additionally, you might want to use the spelling worksheet maker and the spelling test generator. For one spelling worksheet template, your child will select the word that is correctly spelled from three options. You can also use the handout maker to help your child study for spelling tests. Select an image and then type each of the spelling words to create a study guide for him or her.
