Sixth Grade CRCT Practice: How to Prepare for the CRCT Test
Criterion-Referenced Competency Tests (CRCT) are administered from the first through the eighth grades in Georgia. Read on to find out how you can help your child prepare for the sixth grade CRCT.
Helping Your Child throughout the Year
If your child retains the expected knowledge for the sixth grade level and has succeeded through the school year leading up to the CRCT, he or she shouldn't have a problem. Consult with your child's teachers on a regular basis in order to ensure that your sixth grader is on the right track. Be aware of your child's strengths and weaknesses so that you may address them effectively. For example, if your child's math skills are strong but he or she struggles with reading comprehension, provide supplemental reading help.
Getting Ready
In order for your child to be ready for the CRCT, he or she must have a clear understanding of what to expect. Your sixth grader will be tested in language arts, reading, math, social studies and science.
The language arts portion of the CRCT tests your child on sentence structure and grammar. Your child will need to hone their reading comprehension skills and be able to accurately answer questions about various passages for the reading assessment test. For the math section, your sixth grader needs to understand geometry, algebra, probability, measurements, factors, prime factorization and common denominators. The social studies portion of the exam covers geography, world history and basic economics. As for science, your child will need knowledge of solar system astronomy, weather, temperature and earth formation processes.
Studying Resources
Use Web resources for extra at-home practice. The Georgia Department of Education offers a free sixth grade level study guide in PDF format. The online study guide describes the specific skills tested on the CRCT. Students in Georgia also use the Online Assessment System to practice for the CRCT. Schools assign each student a user name and password to access the system, which you can use to log in and print sixth grade CRCT practice tests.
Based on the information in the study guide, find appropriate practice activities for your child available from various free resources. For additional sixth grade CRCT practice, check with your child's school or use the online resources of other elementary schools in Georgia.
