TAKS Math Problems: Practice for Students Preparing for the TAKS Test

The Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) exams are given annually. Your child may practice for the test by completing a previous year's exam and by reviewing math concepts. The following sites offer free online practice.

Texas Education Agency Practice Exams

Every three years, the Texas Education Agency (TEA) posts a TAKs exam online to show the changes made to the test and to provide students an opportunity to review for the test. Your child can print out PDF versions of the exam here, or take interactive online tests.

The test is divided into separate sections for each subject, so the math test doesn't include any problems from other academic areas. Tests are available here for 9th and 10th grade, and there are several old exams for each grade level. Some of the math topics that appear on the TAKs exams in these grades are geometry, measurement conversions and algebra.

EdInformatics.com TAKs Test Samples

If your child is in 3rd-6th grade, you may find these practice TAKS tests helpful. This site has taken actual TAKS math exams and turned them into interactive online tests. This means your child can answer the questions and view his or her results onscreen, and you don't have to mark the test according to an answer sheet. In the 3rd grade exams, math topics include identifying odd and even numbers, telling time and creating equations.

Middle School Math Review from EDHelper.com

Once you have seen some old TAKS math exams for your child's grade level, you can look in other locations for practice problems. Here, there are math review worksheets for middle school students. You can view and print all of them for free, and you can even create your own math sheets. Making a custom sheet can help your child hone specific skills where he or she might have trouble. EdHelper.com is an extremely detailed site and includes dozens of sub-sections that deal with every math unit your child will learn in middle school. The TAKs test may not cover every unit every year, but it is impossible to know exactly what will appear, so your child should be prepared for everything.
