Homeschool Testing Information for 9th Graders in Oklahoma

Testing Requirements in Oklahoma

Perhaps the biggest piece of testing information you'll want to know about is that the state does not have established laws that make testing required. Therefore, parents have the choice to determine how they assess their children throughout the school year. Since parents are working closely with their children on an intimate, one-on-one basis, they are usually able to assess how well their children are progressing with the lessons and skills being taught. In addition, to make sure their children are learning the appropriate material, many parents will work with schools to put together their lesson plans and assessment tools. Thus, the need for parents to give tests is eliminated.

Why You Should You Still Administer Tests

Although it is not mandatory for parents to give tests to their 9th grade students in Oklahoma, many still choose to do so for various reasons. One of the basic reasons is simply to see if their children are actually learning. Another reason is to make sure their students are familiar with the test taking process in preparation for college entrance exams, such as the PSAT, SAT and ACT. You may even want to teach your child some test-taking skills because they will be useful if your child decides to continue his or her education in college.

Oklahoma End-of-Instruction Tests

Even though you aren't required to give tests when you're homeschooling, you may want to be familiar with the state standardized tests given to students in Oklahoma. For 9th grade students, these exams are known as the Oklahoma End-of-Instruction tests. If your children end up going back to public school, they will be required to take these tests. Like other state exams, students taking Oklahoma End-of-Instruction tests will be required to show their mastery of the common core standards established by the Oklahoma State Department of Education. Specifically, students will be tested on algebra, biology, English, geometry and history.
