When students are in the 3rd grade, they have usually learned how to read, but continue to work on expanding vocabulary and improving reading fluency and comprehension. Reading frequently, both for school and for fun, can help your third grader improve his or her reading skills. A number websites offer free online reading material for third graders. Reading Materials from Highlights Kids

The website from Highlights Kids is a free online reading and learning resource provided by the Highlights for Children magazine. Whether or not you subscribe to or purchase the print magazine, Highlights Kids is a solid stand-alone educational experience. Your child can practice his or her reading skills with fun articles, stories, animated stories, comics and poetry. There are also a number of regular features. For instance, in the 'Arizona Zone', you can find multiple short stories about a fictional girl named Arizona.

Reading practice isn't the only educational activity offered by Highlights Kids, although almost all the activities presented here will help your child with his or her reading comprehension and fluency skills. There are also craft activities, science experiments, recipes, an idea-a-day generator and letters from kids. Your child can write Highlights Kids and may receive an answer. He or she can also submit drawings, poems, stories and other creative projects and Highlights Kids may post them.

TIME Magazine offers a news website for childen called TIME for Kids. Some of the topics covered here are health, sports, world, nation, entertainment, science and more. There's also a homework helper and a 'Kid Reporters' section where your child can submit news stories for consideration. Although you can become a member for extra features, it probably won't be necessary to get your child the reading practice that he or she needs.
