PBS Kids' Reading Practice Games

There is a wide variety of free reading games available from PBS Kids. The games offered here are all based on popular educational shows for kids, such as Clifford the Big Red Dog, Sesame Street, Martha Speaks, Barney and Friends, The Electric Company and more. Vocabulary, phonics, grammar, reading comprehension and fluency are just a few of the topics addressed by these games.

The 'E-Card Creator' from Sesame Street is a useful reading tool that your child can use to develop his or her creativity and social skills. First, your child will select the occasion for the card from a list that includes subjects like 'Happy Birthday' and 'Get Well Soon'. Next, your child will choose the background art, the foreground art and select from a number of possible greetings. Finally, your child can e-mail the card to the person of his or her choosing.

Reading Resources from FunBrain.com

For a number of reading resources for kids, look no further than FunBrain.com. This site includes fun reading activities, comics, e-books, Mad Libs and several different interactive games. Some of the topics that the games address are grammar, parts of speech and root words.

Book Adventure's Quizzes and Book Lists

Book Adventure is a valuable resource for book lists and reading quizzes. There are nearly 8,000 books listed here that you and your child can look through to decide what he or she wants to read. The books can be sorted by grade level, reading difficulty or subject. The subjects that you can select from include hobbies and crafts, computers, horror stories and ghosts, animals, poetry and history.

All the books listed by Book Adventure also include multiple-choice quizzes that your child can complete after he or she finishes reading. These quizzes allow you to monitor your child's reading comprehension and fluency levels. By taking these quizzes, your child can begin to accumulate points with the site. After reaching certain number of points, your child can redeem prizes provided by Book Adventure's sponsors. For example, after accumulating 2,000 points, your child can cash them in for a 6-month subscription to Highlights for Children magazine. To access the quizzes and prizes, your child must become a member; however, registration is completely free.
