Overview of Tutoring Programs in Alabama
Partners in Neighborhood Growth
Starting out as a youth program when it was established in 1981, Partners In Neighborhood Growth (PING) is a not-for-profit organization with the aim of successfully developing youth in Birmingham. One major focus area for PING is education. After-school educational programs are provided to work with students from the struggling communities in Alabama. One such program is the Alabama Reading Initiative (ARI), which focuses on closing the academic achievement gap of underprivileged students by helping them improve their reading and literacy skills, as well as overall reading comprehension. In addition, PING offers homework help and one-on-one tutoring in math, reading and writing.
Better Basics
Better Basics is an Alabama initiative started to help students in the area of literacy. With a goal of increasing the graduation rate of central Alabama students, Better Basics focuses on early intervention and enrichment by working primarily with elementary and middle school students. In addition, through volunteer service and community donations, Better Basics is able to offer its services at no charge.
One of the programs provided by Better Basics is Reading Intervention, which works with elementary students who are reading below grade level. In the program, students work in small groups three times a week for 45 minutes with a trained Better Basics teacher. The Reading Intervention program generally lasts 20 weeks. In addition, Better Basics sponsors HOPE learning centers for students in grades K-8. The four centers are located around Fairfield City and provide a safe place for young children to learn and grow when parents aren't around or available.
