Talk to Teachers First

When you realize your junior high school student is struggling in school, the first people you'll usually want to contact are his or her teachers. Most of the time, teachers are able to give you specific information about your child's performance and the areas that seem to be difficult for him or her. Armed with this information, you may be able to tutor your child without getting outside help.

Another good reason to contact teachers first is to find out about your child's behavior in class. Sometimes, especially in junior high, students start focusing on their social life and put education on the backburner. As a result, you may find that your child is struggling due to a lack of focus and not being responsible.

Check School Programs

Depending on your child's specific situation, the school may offer programs that help students who are are experiencing difficulties keeping up with the material presented in class. Some schools will pull struggling students out of their elective classes to work with academic specialists in a small group setting. Others offer extended day programs where students are able to stay after school to receive help on specific content. School counselors or administrators can inform you about such programs.

Get Peer Assistance

Another tutoring route to look into is getting help from your children's peers. In this case, it can help to talk with your child's teachers again because they'll be able to identify students who are strong in certain areas and who can serve as peer tutors for your child.

Talk to High School Students

Since junior high school students will eventually be transitioning to high school, current high school students can also serve as good tutoring options. Your child can benefit from getting help from older high school teens who are highly skilled in certain academic areas. In fact, your local high school may even have programs that offer this service.
