Tutoring Information for Michigan Parents

Supplemental Educational Service Program

Depending on the academic status of the school your children attend, they may qualify for free tutoring with the Supplemental Educational Service (SES) program. When schools have not met Adequate Yearly Progress for a number of consecutive years, the state will provide tutoring service to the students of those schools with district funding under the No Child Left Behind Act. The tutoring generally takes place after school and last about two hours. You can contact administration at your children's school or the district to see if the program is available.

Jumpstart

Jumpstart is a program hosted by the University of Michigan that pairs students from the university with preschool children in Ann Arbor. The college students volunteer as one-on-one mentors for the young kids. In addition, they work with the students as tutors to help them build literacy and language skills.

KCP Outreach

For middle school and high school students, the University of Michigan also provides tutoring through the KCP Outreach program. Working in the Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti areas, college students travel to schools to tutor students in the areas of math, science, foreign languages and history. The program also provides homework assistance.

Michigan Reach Out

Michigan Reach Out is a program dedicated to helping underprivileged K-12 students achieve and maintain academic and social success. Primarily a mentorship program, students from the University of Michigan and other volunteers go out to various Michigan schools and establish relationships with students. Additionally, a big part of this program is tutoring. Mentors and volunteers meet with parents and teachers to find out what areas they should focus on when working with each individual.

Traditional Options

Besides the tutoring options specific to Michigan outlined above, there are also traditional tutoring routes you may want to look into. One such route is taking advantage of teacher tutoring sessions. Many teachers offer tutoring to their students in the morning before school starts or after school. With the help of teachers and counselors, you may also be able to arrange peer tutoring and have your children work with students who are strong in the academic areas they're struggling with. Finally, a simple search on the Internet can lead you to a host of online tutoring options.
