Tutoring Websites: Online Learning Help Sites

Does your child need help with schoolwork? In particular, could he or she use help occasionally with homework or preparing for a test? If the answer is yes to any of these questions, keep reading to learn about a handful of websites that can provide your child with tutoring at no charge.

Find available tutors

Free Tutoring from Learn to Be

For free learning assistance, check out the services offered at Learn to Be's website. The Learn to Be Foundation is dedicated to helping underprivileged kids succeed academically, and their tutoring services are available twelve hours a day, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., PST. They provide free tutoring in math, science and English/language arts for kindergarten through 8th grade students.

To use this service, your child can log on to the site and request assistance, indicating his grade in school and the subject he's studying. No appointments are necessary and the tutoring services are free and open to everyone - all a student needs is a computer with Internet access. The tutors are thoroughly screened for educational and personality requirements and must receive certification through the Learn to Be Foundation.

Once the session is arranged, your child will work with her tutor in an online classroom setting. She and her tutor will be able to communicate using audio and a 'virtual whiteboard'. The virtual whiteboard works best with a computer tablet and stylus; however, a standard mouse will also be fine. Your child will be able to both download and upload any documents from the virtual whiteboard during the session. Every tutoring session is recorded and saved on the site, as well. As a result, your child can refer to the session in the future to review her work.

Tutoroli's Online Tutoring Services

Tutoroli is an entirely free tutoring service available online. All users, whether they are tutors or students, must first register on the site before they can begin. Then, users can either join an existing tutoring group or, if they'd prefer, start a new one. Every group has multiple tutors and a tutoring administrator, or group leader, who facilitates the group. Your child can either access what's already on the site, or else you and others in your community can create your own tutoring group to address any specific concerns your child or children may have.

Math Assistance from MathNerds

If your child is having difficulties with math lessons at any level, MathNerds can be a solid source of math assistance. MathNerds is staffed by trained educational professionals and students. Their goal is to help children study math, complete homework assignments and gain confidence as math students. Your child can submit a question via e-mail and will usually receive a response within 16 hours. The response won't simply be a correct answer; it will be a complete lesson. This approach will help your child understand the mathematical concepts involved, which should make it easier for him to solve other, similar problems in future assignments.
