Kindergarten Tutoring Options in NYC

One-to-One Tutoring

One-to-One Tutoring is a part of the Community Impact services offered by Columbia University. Working with students from the ages of 6-12, the program is free to all students in this age range who are New York City residents. Although your kindergartener is likely too young to take advantage of this program, he or she can benefit from it in 1st grade. Each student enrolled in the program is assigned to work with a tutor on a one-on-one basis and can receive help in reading, writing, history, science or mathematics. The One-to-One tutoring program is held on the campus of Columbia University in Lerner Hall on Saturdays between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm. Each individual session lasts an hour and a half.

826NYC

The New York City branch of the 826 National network is called 826NYC. It is a non-profit organization that focuses on aiding the academic and social development of underserved children. The program operates primarily with volunteers and donations; as a result, all of its services and programs are offered for free to students between the ages of 6-18. To this end, 826NYC provides a Drop-In Tutoring program for students on Sundays from 2:30 pm - 5:30 pm and Mondays through Fridays from 3:00 pm - 5:30 pm. The main focus of 826NYC's tutoring is writing, but students are also able to receive help in the other academic areas.

Vacamas Programs for Youth Tutoring Program

Based in both New Jersey and New York, the Vacamas Programs for Youth provides its tutoring services to students through Supplemental Educational Services (SES). The program is free to students; however, based on the conditions of SES programs, students receiving the service must attend schools that have failed to meet academic content standards and they must be eligible to receive free or reduced lunch. If students qualify based on those conditions, they will be able to benefit from the small group or individual instruction provided by the Vacamas Programs for Youth. Students will primarily receive help in the areas of math, science and language arts. As students go through the program, progress reports are given on a monthly basis.
