Passing the OPT

You must take the official practice test (OPT) and obtain a passing score of at least 420 on each sub-test and a total score of 2,250 to register for the GED. The OPT is given at adult basic educational centers throughout West Virginia. You can find a location near you by using the test center locator available on the West Virginia Adult Basic Education (WVABE) website.

After you pass the OPT and follow the registration procedures, you will be given a voucher allowing you to take the GED for free. If you're retaking the exam, you have to fulfill additional requirements to qualify for free testing.

Age Requirements

Regardless of age, everyone needs to pass the OPT before taking the GED. If you're under 19, you can test after passing the OPT and by meeting the following age requirements:

1. You're 18 and the class you would be in if you remained in school has graduated. A release form is required if your class has not yet graduated.

2. You're 17, your high school class has not graduated and you're not enrolled in school. You also must submit a signed permission form from your parents. Additionally, 17-year-olds can test with parent permission if they have withdrawn from school, been placed in an alternative school or home-schooled a month prior to registering for the test.

3. If you're 16 or 17 you can also qualify by being enrolled in the GED Option Pathway. Find out about this program and other ways to qualify at 16 by contacting the West Virginia Department of Education.

How Do I Prepare For the GED?

Adult basic education centers offer the OPT as well as classes and advice to help you prepare for the GED. By taking the OPT you will find out what areas you need to study and if classes and instruction might help. Adult basic education classes are free and the WVABE directory can help you locate a site close to you. Sample questions may also be found on the American Council of Education (ACE) GED Testing Service website.

The GED test is divided into five sections, including reading, writing, mathematics, science and social studies. The questions are mostly multiple-choice and there is an essay required for part of the language arts - writing portion. Help with the essay or any other part of the test can be obtained through an adult basic education center.
