What Does My 8th Grader Need To Know By The End Of The Year?

Although 8th graders learn different content depending on the specific curriculum at their school, all 8th graders need to know certain things by the end of the year.

  • Eighth graders should know how to study independently. Middle school teachers provide a lot of support, but high school teacher expect kids to be independent. By the end of the year, your 8th grader should be able to plan a study schedule and stick to it. He or she should also be able to make study guides.
  • Your 8th grader should leave middle school with the ability to write a well-structured paper. He or she should know the basic form of the five paragraph essay, which has an introduction, three body paragraphs and a conclusion. He or she should also know how to write a basic thesis describing the paper.
  • The math class offered to 8th graders differs from school to school, but your 8th grader should be comfortable all of the math taught in his or her school. He or she will need to use this knowledge in 9th grade math because math is cumulative and each year uses concepts from the year before.
