Math Help
The first grade math program at Sylvan Learning is designed to help your child master basic math skills such as addition and subtraction, math facts, shape recognition, and place value. The program is adapted for active first graders, and lessons include manipulatives, including blocks to practice math facts and clocks to practice telling time. The tutors will adjust the program to address your child's specific needs. By working on math facts and other basic skills, you'll find that your child solves problems more confidently and spends less time on homework. You'll receive progress reports that keep you informed of the skills that your child is working on as well as the ones he or she has mastered. Sylvan Learning's math program aligns with standards developed by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.
Reading Help
Sylvan Learning's first grade reading program follows a process recommended by the National Reading Panel and uses motivational rewards to help keep your child enthusiastic about the tutoring lessons. The tutors pace lessons according to each child's needs, which means that your child won't begin a new lesson until he or she has mastered the previous skill. Your child will complete guided reading practice, which will help him or her learn about letter-sound associations, phonics, sight words, and reading fluency. As your child continues throughout the program, you'll see him or her develop into a more confident and fluent reader.
