How Sylvan Can Help Your Second Grader

Students in the Sylvan tutoring program develop the core math and reading skills they'll need for lifelong academic success. Math Help

The second grade math tutoring program at Sylvan Learning builds on and expands your child's basic math skills. Students practice higher order counting, comparing and ordering numbers and basic money skills such as making change and identifying the value of a coin collection. Your child will also become fluent in multi-digit addition and subtraction and be exposed to multiplication and division through the use of pictures and concrete objects. The individualized learning plans in the Sylvan second grade math program align with the standards set forth by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. They use concrete objects and manipulatives to make math come to life and include regular reports so you can track your child's progress. Upon completing the program, students should see a reduction in homework time as they become more comfortable with math concepts.

Reading Help

The Sylvan second grade reading program uses a motivational token system to reward your child for reaching personal goals and keeping him or her excited about learning. Core skills emphasized in the program include phonemic awareness, vocabulary building, phonic skills and reading fluency. Sylvan learning plans are individualized for each child's needs. The reading program emphasizes guided reading practice and focuses on one skill at a time, following recommendations from the National Reading Panel.
