What You Need to Know about After-School Learning Programs

Reading Enrichment

If you want to make sure your child continues to grow as a reader, you may want to look into reading enrichment programs. In such programs, students will often improve their reading skills by reading advanced books and participating in projects and discussions about the material. In some programs, students will also attend professional readings from children's authors. If your child's school does not have such a program, you may be able to find one at your local library or community center.

Math Workshops

Math workshops can serve as tutorial options for students who are struggling or enrichment avenues for those students who need to be challenged. Many schools will offer the math workshops after school or before school. In some cases, however, students are selected to participate in the workshops based on their grade and testing history.

For enrichment, students are often introduced to advanced math concepts that they will usually learn in higher level grades, such as algebra. In addition, some math workshops will contain a competition component, where students will participate in various math games.

Science Exploration

If your child is interested in the sciences, there are after-school programs that allow him or her to explore the field in a hands-on way. Some of these programs are held at local establishments, while some travel to elementary schools and after-school community centers. In these programs, students are often introduced to new technology and concepts, and use the newfound knowledge to create science projects or presentations.

Creative Arts

To help your child become a well-rounded student, you may also want to look into creative art programs. There are plenty of after-school options for students to get involved with music, art and theater. Most arts programs attempt to align their content with the core standards, like reading, science and math. In fact, many of these programs have their own learning standards that guide instructors to help their students grow.
