Preparing for the SAT Test: Information and Tips

Learn About Each Section of the Test

Before your teen can begin to prepare for the SAT, he or she will need to know what the test covers. The test is broken down into the three sections of writing, critical reading and math. All three sections contain three subsections.

In the writing section, your teen will have to write an essay and answer multiple-choice questions about correct sentence structure and completion. In the critical reading section, he or she will have to read a series of short and long passages and answer questions dealing with comparing and contrasting, inference and prediction. In the math section, questions will cover complex word problems, algebra and grid work.

Use Online Resources

One of the best resources for SAT preparation is the Internet. You'll be able to find detailed information about how the test is scored and the closest location to take the exam. You'll also be able to find study guides and information on what scores are needed to get accepted into the numerous colleges and universities.

Build Vocabulary

One of the most challenging aspects of the SAT test is the vocabulary. Not only are there questions that specifically deal with complex vocabulary words, but many of the general questions contain advanced terminology as well. For this reason, it's a good idea to have your teen build his or her vocabulary on a daily basis. You can find SAT word lists by searching the Internet.

Take Practice Tests

Encourage your teen to take practice SAT tests. At your local bookstore, you can find many SAT preparation books that contain practice tests. There are also plenty of sites online that offer practice testing materials. In addition, some schools offer preparation courses, in which your teen will complete practice exams.

Get Tutoring Help

After your teen has taken a practice test and you've been able to identify weak areas, you can get tutoring assistance. Depending on where you live, you may be able to find an organization that offers the service after school. In addition, college students who scored well on their SAT tests will often tutor others.
