What Tutoring Services Are Available?

Since elementary-level tutors typically work one-on-one with children, they can individualize instruction to meet your child's specific needs. Before hiring a tutor, you should first identify specially what your child needs and what your budget is. The kind of tutor that you're looking for will be quite different if, for example, your child needs help with their math homework as opposed to needing help with Spanish. Three common options you'll encounter are hiring a private tutor, going through a tutoring company or using an online tutoring service.

Private Tutors

To look for a private tutor, you might want to check the local classified print ads as well as areas in your community where there are education-related flyers. Another place to look is online at websites that offer free classified ads. The rates for private tutors will vary, depending on their education and experience; however, they can provide your child with a personal, one-on-one learning experience.

Tutoring Companies

There are many local and national tutoring companies to choose from. Some companies offer in-home tutoring, while others have centers where you'll bring your child for tutoring. Some of these companies individualize instruction and others use a curriculum. One of the benefits of going through a company is that it's usually cheaper than hiring a private teacher and can be more reliable since the tutors are qualified, pre-screened and chosen for you. However, the experience may be less personalized.

Online Tutoring

Hiring an online tutor for your child is another option to consider. Many public libraries offer free tutoring through a number of websites, but you can also purchase tutoring minutes on your own from private tutoring companies. Purchasing a certain amount of minutes from an online tutoring company can be useful if your child only needs help temporarily rather than over a sustained period of time. For example, if your child is struggling with one particular math assignment, you might consider an online tutor.
