6th Grade TAKS Math Test: How to Prepare

Texas 6th graders take the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) every spring. Students are tested on the state math standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). If your child could use some math review prior to this exam, you might want to check out the following sites, which offer free math resources for kids.

Practice Tests from the Texas Education Agency

One of the best ways to prepare for a test is to take a practice test. The Texas Education Agency has released tests online from 2009 for grades 3-8. Your child can download and print a full-length math exam and corresponding answer key. The test problems are multiple-choice and cover the spectrum of 6th grade math units, from reading graphs to identifying ratios and adding fractions.

The exam has 46 questions and begins with several charts to aid students in completing the test. You'll find a chart listing the relevant geometry formulas, including those for volume, area and perimeter, as well as a chart listing conversion measurements, such as kilograms to grams and gallons to quarts.

Math Review from MrNussbaum.com

Your child can review 6th grade math using the free, interactive activities available here. This website has a wide variety of resources, including an arithmetic worksheet generator, a graphing game and fraction exercises. You might want to first identify your child's strengths and weaknesses, and then look for resources here to help him or her catch up.

Several math topics, such as fractions and division, have multiple online activities to help kids improve. Under 'EZ Fractions,' there's an online game, several worksheets and flashcards. If your child wants to practice with a friend, the flashcards could make a fun competition, with one child quizzing the other and seeing who gets the most answers right.

Worksheets from HelpingWithMath.com

Here, you'll find dozens of printable 6th grade math worksheets. Once you know what your child needs to review before taking the TAKS, these worksheets can help you target those areas. This site categorizes resources by grade and by topic. Worksheets are offered for percentages, integers, decimals and simplifying expressions. Answer keys are provided for all the worksheets.
