Homeschooling your Children for the Summer

Homeschooling a child during their summer break can be used as a time to play catch up, or to get ahead. Read on to learn more about the advantages and caveats associated with homeschooling your children for the summer.

Find available tutors

Homeschooling a child in the summer is an option for helping your student learn the skills they didn't quite master during the regular school year.

Research

If you are considering homeschooling your child for the summer, have a look at the teaching guides at your local library. The Internet can also be a valuable resource in your search for information on homeschooling. If you are still unsure about your teaching techniques, especially for special subjects like math or reading, be sure to look into online tutoring centers. These centers are professional and convenient. Your children will receive lessons that are targeted toward the specific skills they need to learn and improve. You will have access to up-to-date reports to see how your child is progressing.

Make a Schedule

Summer is often busy for families. Create a schedule for each week. Set aside specific schooling times for you and your children. This will come in handy when day camp or swim lessons start. Also, since summer tends to be the time families go on vacation, be sure to research the town nearest to where you've planned your trip. There might be some great museums and other educational opportunities that you can visit as a family.

Catching Up Through Homeschooling

If you are homeschooling your child in hopes that they do not have to repeat a class that they failed, be sure to communicate with the school district first. Many school districts will not recognize summer homeschooling as a substitute for a course. However, some schools do have tests that students can take in order to receive credit for a class or grade level. If this is an option for your child, then a study packet should be available for them to work on over the summer. All the questions on the test should come from the information in their study booklet. Base your lessons on the study guide that the school district provided. Creating interesting activities should help them understand and grasp the material they are expected to know.

Homeschooling to Get Ahead

If your child wants to get ahead in math, English, science, or other school subjects, they might also be able to take community college courses for credit during the summer. There are requirements for minors who wish to attend community college, so be sure to check into your state's requirements before attempting to enroll your child. Keep a line of communication open between you and your child's school principal to ensure they will earn credit from their school for the college courses.
